Dogs at Play

Dogs love to play! And our dogs are no exception. A significant part of our comprehensive care program for the dogs in Gilmer County Animal Shelter is participation in playgroups. Research has shown that shelters implementing daily playgroups report more positive outcomes for their dogs in care. We have certainly seen many more happy dogs! Happy dogs are generally less stressed, which results in less disease and less disruptive behavior. All of this results in shorter stays in the shelter and more adoptions!

Each dog is assessed and determined whether to be appropriate for playgroup. In addition, their play style is identified. After that, they head for the play yards! Below are pictures from our adventures. A lot goes into this, so don’t let all the fun fool you. Our volunteers are hard at work, making sure everything runs smoothly and the dogs enjoy themselves.
