This means walking them and/or playing with them in one of the play yards, whichever is most appropriate. At times it also means supporting the staff in other ways, such as helping bathe or take care of their kennels. We need people that can commit to a regular routine schedule where you come once a week for 1-2 hours during the hours of 9 AM – 2 PM. This weekly consistency is very critical for the care of the dogs. As the dogs begin to know you and you know them, you have more opportunities to help them socialize. As this happens, they become more adoptable. You tell us the day of the week that is best for you, and we will add you to that team. Each day of the week has a team leader. When you join our Foster Family, you play a crucial role in our mission by providing loving, temporary homes to help our dogs decompress, heal and flourish to better prepare them for their forever homes. This involves daily responsibilities like feeding, socializing, exercising, and showering them with love. Foster placements can vary from a few days to several months, depending on the needs of the animal and the foster's availability. Types of Fosters Needed ● General and Medical fosters to care for dogs identified with a specific need that would benefit from short or long-term foster or a medical need such as heartworm treatment, surgery recovery, wound care or more permanent disabilities. ● Temporary fosters to cover for general fosters during vacations, emergencies and possible holidays until the general foster returns. ● Single pet home fosters for dogs that do better as a single companion rather than in a home with other animals. ● Experienced baby-bottle fosters for puppies that are abandoned or whose mothers can’t nurse and need bottle care. ● Pregnancy fosters for pregnant dogs who will need supervision during delivery and subsequent care of moms and puppies. Fostering Requirements to Consider: ● You must love dogs and have the ability to provide a safe, temporary home. ● You are at least 21 years of age. ● Your personal pets are up to date on vaccinations and spayed or neutered, unless age or medical exceptions apply. ● You understand and can comply with your landlord, HOA and/or county guidelines about the number of pets allowed in your home. ● You are willing to attend vet appointments, adoption events, and communicate with the Ellijay Paws In Need volunteers and potential adopters about your foster dog. Do you want to help our dogs but you can’t commit to coming to the shelter once a week? Our Take a dog hiking program may be just what you are looking for. We love hiking! And there is nothing better than hiking with a dog companion! Once you complete an orientation with us, we will match you with your hiking partner. You will be required to fill out brief paperwork in order to take one of the dogs off-site. Once you complete the paperwork and you and your dog buddy are checked off by our volunteers, you are free to come get your hiking partner whenever you like and take him/ her on more fun hikes! The hiking opportunities are endless in the North Georgia mountains.
